the editing bin #7: Not another kid movie (51:38)
Every child born after 1937 remembers the first time he or she saw renegade squirrels cleaning a hostel for lonely miners or a two-dimensional prince with perfect hair. For seventy years, Disney has been the forerunner in children’s films, leaving generations of adults with unrealistic expectations about woodland creatures, talking candelabras, and the eternal desire to recapture those fleeting childlike moments of wonder. Maybe that is why so many of today's films for children have a decidedly grown-up content. Rachel, Becca, and Stephanie enter the world of child media by reviewing two 2009 releases: Phoebe in Wonderland and Coraline. Then, they take a look back to a children's cult classic in Labyrinth (1986).
The Critic's Pick for this week is Toy Story (1995).
