the editing bin #30: There’s two things everybody got to find out for theyselves. They got to find out about love, and they got to find out about living. Janie Starks, Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005) (1:01:07)

Family. We fight with and for them. We feel the loss keenly when, for whatever reason, they are no longer with us. We spend our lives recovering from the damage of the past without losing the moments of joy and warmth. Nothing has the ability to build up or break down like family.

Rachel and Stephanie take a look at families — both good and bad — in this week’s episode of the editing bin.  First is the heartbreaking story of Precious (2009) and her painful journey to overcome a destructive home.  The struggles of life make the need for family even greater as Walter Lee Younger learns in A Raisin in the Sun (1961) when he must choose between dreams and his family’s well-being.  Finally, the death of matriarch leaves a family struggling to hold itself together in Soul Food (1997).

The Critic’s Pick for this week is The Shining (1980).
